What
Abrahamic religions have God revealing a list of laws and rules (and punishments) that one must live by. These revelations are thought to be directly from God without any filtering or interpretation from the prophet. The prophet acts affectively as a scribe to record the dictation from God.
Contrast this with the notion that God reveals Himself in a more subtle way that always involves participation or contributions from the person receiving the revelation. Revelations are always filtered and shaped through ones own existing beliefs and preconceptions. A human choice among equal options would be an example of a divine revelation. Not all choices are good because not all beliefs or preconceptions are appropriate for the situation. Religious revelations do not come in ways that defy the laws of physics. God simply breaks symmetry in a non-random way. Statistically speaking, if there is an equal probability of several outcomes, God can help choose the outcome without needing to overcome any known physical (scientific) laws. New ideas and inspiration can occur through this mechanism. As such, these new ideas and inspiration are part God, part us. God can also break symmetry in purely physical systems in ways that don't violate thermodynamic or other physical laws. |
